It is not the Butler’s
intention to give a detailed explanation of these components, just
a brief description in plain English for all to understand.
What is a hard disk drive (HDD)? A
hard disk drive is the primary device within a computer system that
is used to store all information. Most computers ship with
only one hard drive. This is known as the “C” drive,
which is the default drive that the majority of software programs
will install to.
What is RAM (Random Access Memory)? RAM
is an electronic memory that temporarily stores information inside
a computer. If you were to lose power to your system, all information
stored in RAM would be lost. The amount of RAM you have will
determine how fast and how many programs your system will be able
to run at any one time.
What is a CPU (Central Processing Unit)? The
CPU is the main chip within your computer. This chip can perform
millions of calculations per second. The programs you use rely
on this calculating power to enable you to do the things we now take
for granted i.e., typing letters and accessing the Internet.
What is a Motherboard? The Motherboard is the
main component within your system that contains the CPU, the RAM,
and other expansion cards that enable the individual pieces to communicate
and work together
